Pretty Prints, Etc., owned
by Candace Butler,
is a bespoke wedding
broom and acrylic invitations business. Her creations have
been featured in the New York Times, People Magazine, and most recently,
Netflix’s hit show, Love is Blind.
The historical tradition of “hopping the broom” was an African tradition carried over during the days of slavery. Many enslaved people in the United States weren’t permitted to marry legally, so they practiced broom-jumping to symbolize their union. Modern couples who incorporate broom jumping do so to honor their ancestors and keep the tradition alive. Candace Butler was inspired by the process of creating a broom for her own wedding, and so Pretty Prints, Etc. was born. She currently sells her creations on Etsy.
As the demand for her wedding brooms and invitations grew, Butler approached the Maryland SBDC looking for assistance taking her business to the next level. Her consultant, Wynne Briscoe, laid out a plan that would help Butler begin to transition from a part-time entrepreneur to a full-time business owner. She also received guidance on securing vendors for the florals she uses to create her products, increasing cash flow, and hiring staff to assist with administrative tasks.
“I filmed a segment for an upcoming Netflix show. I am excited about the free marketing. I was prepared for this opportunity because my SBDC consultant advised me to make some inventory purchases,” said Butler. “I was contacted/contracted and filmed within 4 days. That would not have been possible before the advice from my SBDC consultant.”
With strategic guidance from the Maryland SBDC, Candace Butler has transformed Pretty Prints, Etc. from a part-time venture into a growing business. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, strategic planning, and expert support.
