PART I: How to Create a Successful Business Plan (Eastern Region, Maryland SBDC)

Learn the basic elements of a business plan and how to structure writing an effective plan to maximize your loan potential! Whether you have an existing plan already and need to make adjustments or are looking to start fresh, we can offer tips for organizing your business model for the changing world in the midst of a pandemic.

About the Instructor: John Hickman has served as the Regional Director of the SBDC for since 2002. Prior to being appointed as the Director, he served as a Business Consultant for the SBDC. He was the Maryland SBDC State Star in 2003 and chairs the state’s Professional Development strategic team. He has worked with other government agencies and private businesses to develop and expand businesses on the Eastern Shore. In addition to his work as SBDC Director, John is an adjunct professor at the Perdue School where he teaches Small Business Consulting and Applied Business Learning. He is a board member or past board member of many local nonprofits and economic and community development entities and serves as an advisor to several community loan funds.

Companies of all sizes, from small to large firms have been successful in selling products and services to government agencies at the federal, state, city, county, and municipal levels. Contractors must know how to distill the information that is most important to a particular decision-maker, state it in a clear concise manner and reinforce its importance to the prospect. Signing up for this two-hour class will provide the information necessary to create a successful capabilities statement for your company. Not only will you receive a Capability Statement Template, but you will learn:

  • What is the purpose of a Capabilities Statement?
  • What information is to be contained in the document and why?
  • When do you use the short one page or long version?

About the Instructor: Arthenia LeFlore is our longest serving Maryland PTAC Procurement Specialist. Ms. LeFlore has been a part of our program since 2005, and her primary area of assistance lies in Anne Arundel, Baltimore Counties. Arthenia has 19 years of experience in the field of procurement and government contracting, starting in 1999 as a senior contract administrator for SRI International Inc. Her experience and affiliations with the Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Center (APTAC) and National Contract Management Association (NCMA) make her one of the most respected voices in her field. Since joining the PTAC Arthenia has serviced 1,088 clients, done over 12,000 counseling hours, and assisted her clients in winning 210 contracts totaling over $188 million.
